Denny Hamlin has credited his parents’ sacrifices as foundational to his racing career.

Fire at Hamlin family home leaves one dead and one hospitalized

Denny Hamlin’s father died and his mother remains hospitalized after a fire at their home Sunday night. In a news release from the Gaston County office of emergency management and fire services, officials said Hamlin’s parents “suffered catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames.”

Dennis Hamlin, 75, died of his injuries at a local hospital. Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where she is actively being treated.

Emergency response and investigation

According to the same news release, several fire departments were dispatched to the home at 6:19 p.m. ET on Sunday and arrived at 6:27 p.m. Responders reported finding “a two-story home mostly engulfed, with flames showing through the entire attic.”

The home is described as a 3,724-square-foot residence built in 2015 and owned by the driver’s real estate company, according to public records. Officials said that because of the extent of the fire and resulting structural collapse, the cause is currently undetermined. The investigation is ongoing.

A difficult period that followed an already serious illness

The loss comes after Dennis Hamlin had been terminally ill and could not travel to Phoenix in November to see his son race for the 2025 Cup title. Hamlin finished second in the championship to Kyle Larson and had said at the time that he believed it would be the last time his father would be alive to see him race for a title.

Hamlin’s reflections on his parents’ sacrifices

Hamlin has frequently spoken about the role his parents played in helping him get started in racing. After his 60th career Cup victory in October at Las Vegas, he described how his father introduced him to the sport at a young age and the lengths his family went to in order to keep him competing.

“He’s the one that got me into racing,” Hamlin said after the Las Vegas win. “He just took me to a racetrack when I was 5 [and] then made all the sacrifices financially to keep me going.”

Hamlin added that his parents “sold everything they had” and that the family “almost lost our house a couple times” while trying to continue supporting his early racing efforts.

Financial strain during Hamlin’s early racing years

Hamlin has also described how limited resources shaped his path. He said his parents did not have the financial means to support him beyond grassroots racing. His father owned a trailer and hitch store in Virginia, and his mother worked in insurance.

“My parents had no money [for racing],” Hamlin said after the Las Vegas win, describing a period in which the family relied on credit cards, sought help from others, and took on additional mortgages. He also recalled hearing arguments at home as his parents struggled with the pressure of continuing to fund his racing.

Hamlin said it was ultimately rewarding to see those efforts pay off, calling it “great it’s all paid off,” while also emphasizing that it was not a path he would recommend.

From early opportunity to long-term Cup success

Hamlin’s career breakthrough came when the late J.D. Gibbs, son of Joe Gibbs, saw him shaking down cars at track-record speed during a test connected to the team’s diversity program. Hamlin competed in one season of the Xfinity Series and received seven Cup starts in 2005 after the firing of Jason Leffler. That opportunity led to a full-time role beginning in 2006.

Since then, Hamlin has driven for Joe Gibbs Racing throughout his Cup career, compiling 60 victories and seven finishes of second or third in the Cup standings.

Role as team co-owner and involvement in major legal dispute

Beyond driving, Hamlin also co-owns 23XI Racing with basketball legend Michael Jordan. The organization has won nine Cup races in its five seasons. Two of its drivers, Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace, made the playoffs this year.

Hamlin has also been among the more visible drivers in the sport, known for his success, outspokenness, and his podcast. He was one of the faces of his team’s antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR. Joined by Front Row Motorsports, 23XI Racing pursued a lawsuit that was described as contentious and that ultimately settled after eight days of trial earlier this month.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. However, it was reported that the suing teams received a financial settlement and that the charter agreement for all teams was revised to include several provisions the teams had asked for in negotiations but did not receive when 13 of the 15 organizations agreed to terms in September 2024.

Mary Lou Hamlin’s support and presence

Mary Lou Hamlin attended the opening days of the trial, including during her son’s testimony. She has been described as one of his biggest supporters and has operated his fan club.
